Project
Overview

In May 2024, the museum was getting ready to unveil the largest exhibition ever presented at the Musée de la civilisation.

The goal of this exhibition was to encourage visitors to reflect on how our culture, generations and the different eras of Québec have evolved throughout its history. The interactive digital installations we had to design needed not only to make new information easier to learn, but also to illustrate various historical periods.

The museum called on our expertise to contribute to part of this ambitious project.

The different workstreams of the project

In collaboration with Université Laval’s Cartography department and the Museum team, we designed maps illustrating the settlement of Québec, offered an overview of migrations and land occupation, and showcased archaeological remains, Indigenous stories, Québec film classics and many other iconic elements of our culture across the ages.

  • Design ideation

Before the project even began, we had to bring our ideas based on the Museum’s proofs of concept and plans, but the media, the technical solution and the desired experience still had to be defined. Several team workshops helped clarify these elements.

  • Scripting and synthesis

Before starting the scripting, we had to establish a method for receiving and filtering the Museum’s essential data. This approach allowed us to start creating the maps and the historical facts to animate, selecting the key elements without overlooking important aspects.

  • Animations

From screensavers to interactive maps and animated stories, the animations we created aimed to make the content more dynamic and engaging for visitors.

  • Experience design

Given the amount of information on the kiosks, it was crucial to break up the content so as not to overload the screens and to keep visitors’ attention. Our kiosks also needed to offer a smooth experience and be 100% accessible.

Animated historical periods

Together with the museum team, we agreed that it was essential to animate 9 historical periods, from the ice age 21,700 years ago to the present day. Given the richness of the content, it was essential to focus on the key elements so as not to overwhelm visitors with information too complex to digest.

Interactive screensavers

To create an even more personalized experience and draw visitors’ attention to our screensavers, we created specific animations for each of our kiosks.

Digital label management tool (product)

First, rethinking the digital label system was an ambitious project in itself. Our mission was to replace the physical signs used to identify objects in the museum’s display cases. Since these cases often hold many objects, changing their layout and updating the information was laborious.

A digital tool built in collaboration with the Museum team, based on an archive library and a CMS, was therefore designed to simplify and speed up the management of this data. This same platform also gave users access to more content about the objects during their visit.

Today, the digital label kiosks offer visitors an enhanced and much richer experience.
